Having just announced the introduction of a new tournament onto the new 2014 Challenge Tour schedule, taking the total number of tournament for the 2014 season to 29, the players and staff headed to Spain for the third event of the year - Challenge de Catalunya.
The Lumine Golf and Beach Resort, a Greg Norman designed course, which opened in only 2008 offers a stern test of any professionals game. Not particiularly long but with accuracy at a premium especially off the tee, course management was the name of the game last week. Especially given the pre tournament weather forecast of light winds, showers and cloudy, although this doesnt do justice to the horrific winds that the payers had to endure, whih were particularly bad on Friday as the second round was completely abandoned due to the wind being strong enough to blow the balls at rest on the greens.
However despite the delays and the abandonment of the days play, reducing the tournament to a three round 54 hole competition, Champions of Golf had three players who made the cut and recorded strong finishes over the weekend, the most noteable performance coming from Jaosn Palmer who fired one of the weeks lowest rounds; four under par to make the cut by a single stroke.
A closing round of 72 from Scott Arnold saw the Australian finish in a tie for 33rd position in his first outing of the season on the Challenge Tour. Fellow Champions of Golf professional Scott Henry shot 74, three over par, in his third round to finish in a tie for 51st, the same finishing position as the third Champions player, Jason Palmer.
After a difficult week with weather, planning, organisation and timings, Champions of Golf are dleighted with the three lads all making the cut and getting their seasons off and running ahead of the Madeira Islands Open in a weeks time on the European Tour.
