Gary Wins Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for Leicestershire

The Leicester Mercury Sports Awards 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award went to veteran golfer and Champions of Golf’s Gary Wolstenholme MBE, who had a distinguished amateur career before joining the European Senior Tour.

The 57-year-old has won three tournaments on the senior tour to add to the 14 titles won during his amateur days.

He came to Leicestershire with his family as a teenager. His Leicester-born father Guy was also a professional golfer, who finished as high as sixth in the Open back in 1960.

Wolstenholme, who was at Kirby Muxloe and the Leicestershire golf courses, said after collecting his award: “I can’t believe this award. I really can’t. I had no idea

“It is an amazing thing to have. The MBE for my amateur career was great, but I didn’t want that to be the end of it.

“To get something like this is a wonderful acknowledgement of what I have been able to achieve and is especially with my connections to Leicestershire and my father, it is very special.

“I now want to give something back to the sport that has been so good to me – possibly through coaching.”

Everyone at the Champions of Golf team sends their sincere congratulations to Gary on his award, and we wish him every success for 2018.

Well Done Gary!!
