Champions of Golf professional Gareth Wright had a week to remember at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club as he competed in the Titleist and Footjoy PGA Professional Championship.
Having opened his account with a two over par first round on the difficult course on Tuesday Gareth followed up with a level par second round to comfortably make the cut on Wednesday afternoon.
Gareth continued to improve his scoring as he fired in a third round 71, one under par which put the West Linton golf professional in prime position to challenge for the coveted title. In spite of horrific weather conditions, and in places a four or five club wind, Gareth returned a final round two over par score for a five over par total and a share of second place overall. Despite missing a few chances on the undulating and wind affected greens, Gareth was very happy with the overall result and even more happy with the news that followed.
With the finish Gareth has qualified for the PGA Cup where the top GB&I professionals take on a team from the US, this year to be played at Slaley Hall GC in September, as well as this Gareth has also qualified for the end of year PGA Finals to be held in Turkey where the top 24 players will compete for 10 places at the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. Not to mention the increased chances of earning a European Challenge Tour card which has been Gareth's long term goal from the start of the season.
From here the Srixon ambassador will make his way to the Northern Open on the PGA Scotland schedule before heading to Newmacher on the EuroPro Tour and then Open and Scottish Open qualifying, this result certainly fills Gareth with the confidence needed to lift silverwear in the remaining six months of the year.
