Thailand's Thaworn Shines Under Lights

The 2018 Staysure Tour calendar kicked off in Sharjah this year, with the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club playing its first host.

Champions of Golf’s Peter Baker and Gary Wolstenholme lined up in a field including Ryder Cup stars such as Des Smyth, and Ronan Rafferty as 2017 MCB Tour Championship Winner Thaworn Wiratchant defeated, Clark Dennis in a four-hole playoff to claim the Sharjah Senior Masters title.

Wiratchant who won the last tour event of 2017 continued his fine form as he shot twelve under par on his way to the title; although it didn’t come easy to the man from Thailand. American, and 2017 Order of Merit winner Clark Dennis, and Australian Peter Fowler both also shot twelve under par to force a three-way play off under the lights in Sharjah. Fowler was knocked out of the play-off at the first attempt after a bogey, leaving Dennis and Wiratchant to battle it out for an additional 3 holes. The Thai man claimed victory over the American shooting par on the fourth play-off hole as Dennis struggled to recover from a poor tee shot.

Peter Baker shot a first round 69, and overall three under par, to leave himself tied eleventh and just one shot off a second top ten finish in the three StaySure Tour events he’s played in.

Gary Wolstenholme came in five over par and tied thirty-second after shooting a best round of 70, which is certainly no mean feat in a field peppered with Ryder Cup players, and European Tour Winners.

Both Gary, and Peter will be hoping to be in action at the next Staysure Tour event at the end of May, at the Kitchen Aid Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, the first major of the senior’s season.
